CPS and students featured at the 2016 National Chinese Language Conference in Chicago
The ninth annual National Chinese Language Conference (NCLC) was held in Chicago in late April and attended by 1,600 educators from across the U.S. and abroad. The conference was organized by Asia Society and College Board, in collaboration with Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban).
Chinese New Year Celebration with performing student troupe from Beijing
Westinghouse College Prep High School hosted the Chinese New Year celebration with well received performance by a Student Performing Art Troupe from Beijing, China on Feb. 11 at its auditorium. More than 500 students from nine CPS schools (Westinghouse, Jones, Lane Tech, Disney II, Goode, Bell, Calmeca, Mitchell and Solomon) attended the event.

Confucius Institute in Chicago brought Chinese paper-cutting artist to students at CPS
Paper-cutting is a folk art that has enjoyed a long history in China. In an effort to enrich the experience of students who are learning Chinese at CPS, CIC, working with the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute, brought Guo Meihua, a well-known paper-cutting artist from China, to classrooms at 21 schools from Oct. 26 to Nov. 6.
"CPS students love to learn Chinese culture with hands-on activities," said Jane Lu, director of CIC. "Chinese paper-cutting is one of the most popular programs."
An extraordinary learning experience in China
This summer, a total of 18 CPS high school students traveled to China to attend a four-week intensive Chinese immersion program at the Hangzhou Wanxiang Polytechnic (WXP), a trade college in Hangzhou, China. The program is part of the President Barack Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative and is funded by the generous support from the Wanxiang American Corp in Chicago and the Wanxiang Group in Hangzhou.
“Going to China has always been a dream of mine since I started taking Chinese class in 2nd grade,” said Jessica Anyaso, one of the participating students.
CPS Students Celebrate Chinese New Year—the Year of the Sheep
Students at all levels of CPS schools participated in a multitude of Chinese New Year celebration through February, enjoying the spirit of festivity, interacting with their counterparts from China, and learning Chinese.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Confucius Institute worldwide
The Confucius Institute in Chicago (CIC) and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University, hosted a Chinese Cultural Festival in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute worldwide at the Whitney Young Magnet High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2014. There were performances and hands-on activities at the Festival. About 2,000 people attended the event.
Ready to send another 24 students to study in China
The Confucius Institute in Chicago held an orientation for 24 students and their parents for their upcoming 4-week trip to China at the Walter Payton College Prep High School on Saturday, May 17. These lucky students, who have gone through a highly selective process, are from eight schools throughout the Chicago Public School district (CPS).
